What if building a house was just the beginning? 

At Habitat for Humanity of the St. Vrain Valley, we’ve always known that safe, affordable housing is more than four walls and a roof. It’s the foundation on which families build stability, children thrive, and neighbors become community. But we also believe our work doesn’t stop at the front door. 

That’s why we’re proud to introduce — or for many of you, reintroduce — the Beloved Community initiative: a vision and a movement that is woven into the very fabric of who we are and how we build. 

What Is the Beloved Community? 

The Beloved Community is a vision for a society rooted in justice, equity, and genuine care for one another. Popularized by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it is not a distant or idealized dream — it is a realistic and achievable way of living together when people commit to nonviolence, reconciliation, and shared responsibility.

In the Beloved Community: 

  • Poverty, hunger, and homelessness are not tolerated — because human dignity demands better. 
  • Racism, discrimination, and exclusion are replaced with understanding, mutual respect, and an all-inclusive spirit of belonging. 
  • Conflict is addressed through peaceful dialogue and reconciliation rather than harm or division. 
  • Love and trust guide action, and justice becomes the foundation for lasting peace. 

At its core, the Beloved Community invites each of us to participate — through learning, service, and courageous conversation — in building a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. 

Why It Matters to Habitat for Humanity 

Habitat for Humanity’s commitment to the Beloved Community is not a new addition to our mission — it’s baked into our origin story. 

Our roots trace back to Koinonia Farm in Georgia, where Black and white neighbors chose to live and work side by side across deep racial divides, guided by love, equity, and a shared belief in human dignity. From that radical, courageous act of community grew the organization that would become Habitat for Humanity. 

Here in the St. Vrain Valley, we carry that legacy forward. We believe safe, affordable housing is the cornerstone of a just society — but we also know that thriving communities are built through relationships. Through bringing people together across differences. Through fostering understanding and working collectively toward the common good. 

Through the Beloved Community initiative, Habitat St. Vrain Valley seeks to: 

  • Build and advocate for affordable and accessible housing as a cornerstone of justice 
  • Create partnerships that foster communication, trust, and friendship 
  • Share the principles and practices of nonviolence to guide personal and community decisions 
  • Grow an inclusive, diverse coalition of neighbors committed to strengthening Longmont 

The Beloved Community is not separate from our work — it is woven into who we are and how we build. 

What’s Happening Right Now 

The Beloved Community initiative is active and growing. Here’s how it’s taking shape in Longmont: 

Beloved Community Summit 

We’re seeking diverse community members ages 15+ to participate in two full days of free workshops and discussions, led by Dr. Vonnetta West, that will directly inform and impact the Longmont community. This is an opportunity to share your perspective, learn alongside others, and help guide meaningful local change. (LINK Apply here Button) 

Beloved Community Talks 

Community Talks are smaller, more intimate discussions where neighbors come together to explore specific topics — like advancing Black homeownership — in an environment of trust and openness. These gatherings are where real relationship-building happens. [LINK to registration / upcoming talk info] 

BeLoved Build Days 

Embracing our mission of bringing people together to build homes, we bring volunteers together to put our faith into action — swinging hammers, raising walls, and building homes side by side. It’s service with meaning. [LINK to Belove Build registration] 

Beloved Community Tables 

The Beloved Community Table is an invitation to slow down and share a meal or conversation with neighbors you might not otherwise meet. Whether you host or attend, these gatherings strengthen the relational fabric of our city. 

You Belong Here — Get Involved 

Everyone has a role to play in building the Beloved Community. You don’t need to be a builder, a donor, or an expert in housing policy. You just need to show up — with curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to engage. 

Here are five ways to get involved right now: 

  • Attend an upcoming BeLove Summit — expand your perspective and connect with others who care about justice and community. May 8 | 6-7pm 
  • Join a Beloved Community Talk — an intimate conversation about real issues affecting Longmont neighbors. 
  • Host or attend a Beloved Community Table — break bread and build relationships across difference. 

The Beloved Community isn’t somewhere we’re going someday. It’s something we’re building, together, right here in Longmont — one home, one conversation, one relationship at a time.
